Silent Auction

The alternative way to shop for the holidays!

The Silent Auction has become a Philadelphia Chapter Holiday tradition and it is a lot of fun!   If you have never attended one, you may be wondering, "what is a Silent Auction,  and how does it work?".

Collecting Donations

The first crucial step is having donations to auction!  SLA members donate items for the auction by filling out the donation form.  The form asks doners to provide a description, suggested retail value and the suggested minimum starting bid and incremental bids.  This bidding info should reflect a compromise between "getting a bargain" and raising money for our cause.  In this way, we avoid bids of 10 cents or severe under bidding for an item of much greater value. This is, after all, in support of our "charity", the Knower Fund, and should not be viewed as a flea market.

The deadline for donations for the 2009 auction is Dec 1, 2009.  If you have an item to donate for the auction, please complete this online donation form and email any photos or images of your item(s) to Rebecca Rishar, Rebecca.Rishar@gmail.com.

What Can I Donate?

Donations can be homemade crafts and artistic works of art, baked goods, "regifting" from the closet at home or lovely gift baskets donated by a favorite place of business.  All donations are tax deductible.  Members are encouraged to solicit donations from various stores or businesses.   Using the donor solicitation form is helpful is this regard.  It provides a potential donor with information about the Knower Fund.   It's great fun to see the wide variety of items each year and great place to showcase one's talents, hobbies or perhaps a side-business!

What if I missed the deadline on the donation form (December 1, 2009)?

Procrastinators have no fear!  We will accept donations up until the very night of the auction.  We will have blank bid sheets available for a description, retail value and incremental bid info to be filled in by you.  HOWEVER, if you want to be included in the catalogue, which will be posted here and given out in print to attendees on the 10th, we need to have your info no later than 5 pm Tuesday, December 1st.

How does the actual auction work?

Typically donated items are displayed on tables with a bidding sheet.  The bidding sheet describes the item, it's retail value, the minimum starting bid and bidding increments (usually $1.00 or $2.00).    Attendees write their name and bid on the sheet of paper of an item they want. Someone else can then up your bid and write their name and bid under yours.  The bidding war is on!  At the predetermined end of the auction, the highest listed bidder wins the prize!
